Ballarat International Foto Biennale
A major international arts festival has found a new home in the beautiful Victorian city of Ballarat. The Ballarat International Foto Biennale [BIFB] is a celebration of the photographic image and its limitless applications as an art form. BIFB’09 will showcase the work of both international and Australian photographers and runs September 4th to October 4th, 2009.
Foto Biennale began in Daylesford in 2005 and was based on the model of Les Rencontres de la Photographie d'Arles in Provence in the South of France. In its second year in 2007 Foto Biennale attracted 20,000 visitors to Daylesford. With the move to Ballarat patronage at BIFB’09 is expected to exceed 40,000, and by 2013 increase to 100,000.
The Festival Core Exhibition Program will be hosted in Ballarat's finest heritage buildings including the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, the Mining Exchange and the Town Hall and is a perfect fit with Ballarat's positioning as an arts and cultural city. BIFB’09 will bring together some of the best, most diverse, innovative and comprehensive collections of contemporary photography and photographic events from international, national and local photographers ever seen in Australia
The Fringe Program of exhibitions will be hosted in commercial galleries, community spaces, cafes and restaurants throughout Greater Ballarat and in the surrounding towns of the Hepburn Shire. Find a venue, organise a show, submit an application and you too can become part of this exciting event.
BIFB Inc President Julie Millowick, commented
“Of all the art forms, photography is both the most democratic and it is also the World’s most popular cultural activity. Digital cameras have revolutionised photographic practice, and every day more and more people discover the joy and enrichment photography can bring to their lives.”
The BIFB is driving the proposed formation of an Asia Pacific grouping of photography festivals incorporating Foto Freo, VIVID in Canberra, and the BIFB from Australia, with similar events in Singapore, New Zealand, China, South Korea, Cambodia and Bangladesh.
"A grouping of multiple festivals will provide a vehicle for cross promotion, exchange of ideas and artists, and increased international arts and culture tourism” said BIFB Festival Director Jeff Moorfoot.

Closing Date for entry to the Ballarat International Foto Biennale [BIFB] Chillout Photography Prize for 2009 is just around the corner. Entries close Friday January 23rd 2009 for the $3000 prize, the winner of which will be announced at the Novotel Forest Resort, Creswick on Sunday March 1st at 2.00 pm.
The Chillout Photography Prize was instigated in 2008 as a joint promotion by the ChillOut committee and the then Daylesford Foto Biennale [since morphed into the Ballarat International Foto Biennale] and was won by Sydney based photographer Fiora Sacco with her image ‘Our Time'.
This year the winner, with the photograph adjudged the best illustration of the theme ‘Diversity’, will be awarded the $3000 prize.
Said BIFB Festival Director Jeff Moorfoot “The 50% increase in prize money over 2008, plus the fact that all entries are included in the exhibition – those images not short-listed for the final will be included in a screen based presentation as part of the exhibition - and the whole show will reprise again as part of the Fringe Program at the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in September. So we are expecting a record number of entries and expect that the finalist exhibition at the Novotel Forest Resort Creswick will be really strong. The show will run over the ChillOut 2009 Festival and will attract a substantial audience”
ChillOut is the largest festival in the entire Grampians region and a major contributor to the local economy, said 2009 ChillOut President Doug Pollard.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Foto Biennale again,” he said, “and very pleased that together we can offer this substantial prize. It’s also great to have the Novotel Forest Resort in Creswick as the venue, as the board is committed to spreading the benefits of ChillOut to more towns in the area.”
